Shanks and Treacy awarded €40k for 2012 campaign

12th March 2009

Max Treacy and Anthony Shanks are the only sailors listed by the Irish Sports Counil (ISC) as 'World Class' athletes in its list of contracted and world class athletes published this week. The Dun Laoghaire pair who campaign a Star keelboat have each been awarded €20,000. The Royal St. George sailors were the only crew in the past 12 months to finish in the top 12 by nation in a 2008 world championship which automatically entitles world class funding. Last July they appealed a controversial decision by the ISA to overlook them for Qingdao.

Sailing breathed a sigh of relief this week when the Irish Sports Council announced that they are continuing their investment in sailing as one of their identified focus sports when they allocated €450,000 to the Olympic squad. More here.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
